Entrance Exam
Entrance testing for the Practical Nursing Program is required and will be held twice a year - in April/May and October/November. Once your application is complete and received by the deadline, you will receive a letter of testing date. Currently we use the KAPLAN - Nursing School Entrance Exam which is a supervised computerized exam.
**PLEASE NOTE: The following details are subject to change.
The exam consists of 71 questions. The breakdown is as follows:
Reading section contains 22 questions. Candidates read four passages and answer questions that measure the essential skills required for reading:
- Determining the logic of a passage
- Comprehending details
- Drawing basic inferences
- Identifying the purpose of a passage
Math section contains 28 questions. The test measures the candidate's ability to apply mathematical principles in the following areas:
- Conversions (metric and decimals)
- Operations
- Ratios
- Word problems
Writing section contains 21 questions. Candidates read nine passages and answer questions that measure the essential skills required for writing:
- Assessing passage development
- Assessing paragraph logic
- Assessing mechanics of writing
**Applicants will not be tested on the Life Science or Physical Science portions listed in the study guide.
Applicants must pass the math, reading comprehension, vocabulary and spelling portions of the examination with an overall score at or above the national average of 60% to determine potential for success in nursing school.
Computer Skills Needed: Use of the mouse and basic keyboard strokes are needed to take the exam.
Study Guide - Interested persons may purchase a study guide - Kaplan Nursing School Entrance Exams - to prepare for the exam by ordering it from any on-line source, from any book store or by checking with your local library.
The original test fee is paid with the application fee. Therefore, for those retaking the exam, there is a $35 re-testing fee.
Results of the pre-entrance test will be sent to you electronically by the testing company.
A suggestion to help increase your reading level is to begin reading medical/nursing magazines to become familiar with reading scientific terms.
