Students will participate in clinical practice at Brookline Manor Retirement Village, Valley View Retirement Community, Lewistown Hospital and several other community sites in Mifflin and Juniata Counties. Clinical rotations begin during Term I course of studies and progress through the program as th e curriculum changes. Clinical time is also spent in the the Clinical Arts Lab in the Practical Nursing Program where students are instructed and tested on proper techniques for various procedures. Students have the opportunity to practice procedures in the lab at anytime.
Through a cooperative effort with the Penn State Learning Center in Lewistown, the Lewistown Hospital's RN Program and the Mifflin-Juniata Career & Technology Center; a new Simulation Lab has been implemented and made available for student clinical experience. The lab is also supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. The Simulation Lab will be utilized during the regular clinical rotation in order to allow students a more controlled environment to perform and practice tasks which they may or may not be exposed to in the normal clinical setting. With the advanced mannequins and equipment available, endless scenarios can be simulated to give the students a realistic practical experience without the anxiety of harming the patient. For more information about the Simulation Lab go to http://ceup.psu.edu/health-science-lab.
Uniforms for clinical are purchased during the first days of class and the cost is part of the student's equipment fees. Each student will also receive the proper equipment in their nurse pack on the first day of class, such as blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, and other supplies needed in the lab.
